What Does Our Independence Root Canal Therapy Involve?

If your tooth is damaged or has decayed over time, the rough spots and breaks in the protective enamel coating of your teeth can give bacteria space to multiply. If bacteria in these places reach the inner tooth pulp, where the blood vessels, nerves, and soft tissues are, a tooth infection can occur. To preserve the tooth, our team may recommend root canal therapy.

Our root canal treatments can be broken down into three phases:

Oral Exam & Imaging: Our endodontist will begin by thoroughly examining your oral health, pinpointing the affected areas, and verifying the underlying cause of your tooth pain. While infections commonly cause severe tooth pain, it's important to rule out other possible causes before beginning treatment. You may need more advanced treatment if the infection spreads to neighboring tissues, and we will discuss your options if we uncover any severe issues that need acute care.

Preparation, Sterilization & Packing Tooth Roots: Once we determine that a tooth infection is causing your dental distress, we'll begin the root canal treatment. Our endodontist performs the procedure to access the tooth's inner structure and remove infected tissue, then treat the entire tooth with antibiotics. Next, we pack the root canals with a body-safe material that seals your root canal from future infection.

Restoration: For our current patients, we place a same-day permanent crown to restore your tooth. We'll create a natural-looking prosthetic tooth in just one appointment with our in-house CEREC® milling machine, providing you with immediate oral function. If you've been referred to our practice by your general dentist, we'll place a temporary filling, and you'll return to your dentist for placement of a permanent restoration.

Why Choose an Endodontist?

Within dentistry, endodontists are specialists that have completed additional years of training and schooling focused on saving damaged or infected teeth. The success of root canal therapy can often come down to the skill and experience of the practitioner performing it. Our endodontist has spent many years providing expert root canal procedures that skillfully eliminate infections and save teeth, so you can trust you're getting exactly the care you need.

Root Canal Therapy FAQ

When your dentist has told you that you need a root canal treatment or you have a tooth that's causing you pain, it can be a distressing experience. It's normal to have questions, and our friendly staff is always available to help you feel comfortable and informed about your care. Some of the frequently asked questions we receive from patients include:

Is root canal therapy painful?
Root canal therapy often gets mischaracterized as a painful procedure. However, the tooth infection itself is what causes the pain. Our root canal treatments aim to eliminate pain and save your tooth. We'll numb the area around your affected tooth and provide the necessary level of sedation to help you feel comfortable. Many patients report that root canal treatment is no more painful than a filling or crown.

Should I get a tooth extraction or root canal therapy?
Our endodontist does everything possible to treat tooth infections and preserve your natural structure. Extracting a problem tooth may sometimes seem like the easiest option. However, the way natural tooth roots interact with your gums and jawbone is very important for keeping your entire smile healthy. If we can't salvage your teeth, we offer skilled extractions and dental implant services to replace teeth and promote optimal oral health.

How long does root canal treatment last?
With proper care, root canal treatments performed by our expert endodontist are designed to last indefinitely. We design our treatments to minimize the chance of tooth infections happening in the future. If you experience a relapse and your treated tooth becomes infected, our practice offers root canal retreatments.
